BC Drumline FAQs – Spring 2019
Q - What’s the schedule like?
A - Rehearsals are Sundays through November. Starting in December there are rehearsals or performances almost every weekend. An updated schedule can be found at http://www.bcdrumline.org/calendar.html
Q - What if I’m in high school, can I still be in the BC Drumline?
A - Technically concurrent enrollment is possible but only in rare circumstances. Good standing in your HS program and permission from your band director, drumline coach, parents/guardians and school administrator is required. If you haven't graduated HS yet, you may want to check out our partner summer program, Golden Empire Drum & Bugle Corps.
Q - How much are member contributions?
A - The 2020 Member Contribution is TBA and includes the cost of traveling to Dayton, OH for WGI Percussion World Championships. The first installment is due upon your acceptance in the line. There is also an audition fee of $20 and the cost of enrolling in the course at Bakersfield College for credit, which is about $100 each semester.
Q - Where does the money go?
A - It goes to travel, lodging, costumes, show design, instruction, circuit entry fees, equipment maintenance, and any other seasonal expenses.
Q - What if I want to be in the BC Drumline but can’t afford the member contribution?
A - Start finding ways now. If you are willing to put in the hard work and hours of practice it takes to travel and perform with the group, then you should also be willing to meet the challenge of fundraising. All members participate in our annual sponsorship campaign, but you may want to find a part time job (during the week) or another way to raise funds. No matter how you do it, you really do need to come up with a plan and go for it!
Q - Can I still march drum corps and perform with the BC Drumline?
A - This is handled on a case-by-case basis as everyone’s situation is different. We've had people in the line that have done this, but it requires great communication with both staffs and a lot of hard work. In fact, many of our members participate in our own DCI program. Really take a look at your calendar and start to identify the conflicts right away, then talk to us so we can help you figure things out.
Q - I'm not sure if I'm too old to be in the group. What's the age limit?
A - According to the WGI rulebook, members not over 22 years of age as of March 31st of any given year shall be permitted to compete in contests governed by WGI. That means if you don't turn 23 before April 1st you're good to go.
Q - Can my parents help?
A - Yes! We encourage parent involvement on any level. This includes set building, sewing, or helping out on rehearsal days. Maybe your parents just want to come support us at shows, help push equipment, help with logistics, etc. Email Tim Heasley at [email protected] for details.
Q - I have another question that's not answered here. What should I do?
A - Just get in touch at the email address listed above. Someone will get back to you as soon as possible...usually within a day or two.
